CORNWALL – The city’s hospital has been recognized as among the top hospitals in Ontario to make sure potential organ donors give the gift of life to others.

Cornwall Community Hospital has been part of the Trillium Gift of Life Network since June 2013 and also part of the province’s Route Notification Program.

The hospital was evaluated from July through September 2016 on two criteria: how well it informs Trillium when organs and tissues are available and the number of potential organ donors actually become donors (called the conversion rate).

Cornwall hospital is among the ten hospitals in Ontario with a 100 per cent conversion rate. There were 56 hospitals evaluated on their conversion rates.

The other nine hospitals were CHEO in Ottawa, the University of Ottawa Heart Institute and hospitals in Hamilton, Kingston, London, Toronto, Barrie and Kitchener.

Hospital CEO Jeanette Despatie said they are proud yet humbled about the “lives being impacted by organ donation.”

Ontario is the only province that makes the organ donation data public, a practice the hospital believes has led to higher donation rates.

Across the province, nearly two-thirds of organ donors gave the gift of life.
