CORNWALL – Via Rail and the union representing the majority of employees has come to terms on a new contract, averting a strike.
The union representing 1,800 Via Rail employees was poised to strike on Monday morning.
But around 11 p.m. Sunday night, Via Rail and Unifor announced that a deal had been reached for the employees who work in stations, telephone sales, maintenance centers and administrative offices.
They had been without a contract since Dec. 31, 2015.
Unifor said details on the four-year tentative agreement won’t be released until its ratified by both sides.
“Unifor is dedicated to protecting good jobs for our members, and that’s what this agreement accomplished,” Unifor National President Jerry Dias said. “We’re pleased that terms were reached without service interruption or inconvenience to passengers and our members.”
Unifor’s ratification will take place over the next three weeks.
