SAINT-ANICET, Que. – Members of the Cornwall Regional Task Force seized a cube van with over 1,000 kilograms (2,200 pounds) of tobacco during a bust last month.

The bust happened Jan. 7, 2016 but officials only released details of the takedown on Friday.

Officers were working with the Valleyfield detachment of the Quebec Provincial Police when they saw four people off-loading garbage bags on the shore of the St. Lawrence River.

When the police moved in, the four suspects from the Toronto-area attempted to flee but were quickly arrested.

A U-Haul cube van with 50 bags of tobacco weighing roughly 1,131 kilograms (2,488 pounds) was seized.

The foursome are facing Excise Act charges, as well as Quebec Tobacco Tax Act charges.
