CORNWALL – The mild weather has been good news for the shipping industry.

The St. Lawrence Seaway closed its 2015 regular navigation season on Dec. 24.

However, due to favourable weather, the St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation has extended the period for special ship transits.

Companies can make applications before Dec. 30 to travel the Montreal to Lake Ontario portion of the seaway.

The extension could help the seaway which has seen cargo levels and vessel transits dip this year compared to 2014.
