CORNWALL/AKWESASNE – Another dramatic chapter of demolishing the north channel bridge will happen very soon.

Crews with American Bridge Canada have installed four platforms, which will act as anchor points to lift the arch over the Cornwall canal off its concrete piers and place it on the ground.

It will then be cut up for recycling.

The slow exercise of getting the structure from high above the canal to terra firma is expected to happen in the next few weeks.

“(It’s) still too early to give an exact date, but most likely in late September/early October. This slow process will take place over many hours and everyone will have a chance to see the (slow) action,” Federal Bridge Corporation spokesman Andre Girard said on the firm’s website.

The demolition of the Three Nations Bridge – part of the $75 million bridge replacement plan – is expected to be done by the end of June 2016.

The demolition contract was nearly $15 million.
