AKWESASNE – A drinking water advisory for four Akwesasne islands has been lifted.
The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne Environmental Health Officer lifted the advisory Friday for Hamilton, Pilon, Dickerson and Colquhoun Islands.
Since the Canadian Coast Guard and Nadro Marine have suspended operations, the band’s health officer felt the safety of the river water was not a risk at this point.
Residents of the islands are urged to run their cold water taps for five minutes to make sure they are well flushed.
However, Akwesasne isn’t ruling out another precautionary water advisory down the road when de-fueling to the tugboat Lac Manitoba begins.
The “Do Not Consume Water” advisory had been in effect since June 26.
