GLEN WALTER – An early morning crash near Purcell Road has left a driver in pretty bad shape and closed County Road 2 for roughly seven hours.

South Glengarry firefighters from the Glen Walter station, SD&G O.P.P. and EMS were called to the scene in the early morning hours.

The O.P.P. tweeted from their East Region Communications account at 3:40 a.m. County Road 2 from Purcell Road to Rae Road was closed as police were “conducting (an) inquiry.”

An attendant at a nearby gas station tells Cornwall Newswatch she saw a car in the ditch just east of Purcell Road as she was heading to work this morning (Saturday).

A source says the vehicle involved was a black GMC Yukon and emergency workers had to cut the driver out of the vehicle after the SUV struck a tree.

The section of road is a tight curve and has no guardrail on the north side of the highway.

SD&G O.P.P. Const. Tylor Copeland says the collision resulted in “substantial injuries” to those involved, though he was not able to confirm whether more than one vehicle was involved or how many occupants were in the SUV.

The O.P.P. tweeted later in the morning, just before 11 a.m., that the highway had reopened though the gas attendant believes traffic wasn’t flowing again until 1:30 p.m.

O.P.P. expect to release more details Monday morning.
