CORNWALL – A young girl was taken to hospital Tuesday afternoon after being struck by a pickup truck in a quiet residential neighbourhood.

City police, firefighters and EMS were called to Cumberland Street, near the south entrance to Ellen Avenue, around 6 p.m.

A number of visibly shaken children were staying close to their parents as paramedics loaded a young girl into an ambulance.

She was taken to hospital as a precautionary measure.

Cornwall police say their early investigation indicates the girl – possibly eight- or nine-years-old – ran into the street before she was hit.

Police have spoken to a number of witnesses including the child’s mother.

The pickup truck driver was interviewed before he was allowed to leave just after 6:30 p.m.

An investigation is ongoing.
