SOUTH STORMONT – Ratepayers in the township will only be able to use credit cards to pay for recreational programs online starting Thursday.

With no discussion, council moved Wednesday night to nix the acceptance of plastic for paying taxes and various services at the office.

The township had been tacking on a two per cent so-called convenience fee.

But it had to change its policy tonight because the practice of adding a fee has been deemed “unacceptable” by Federal Competition Bureau and the card issuers’ terms and conditions.

Last year, South Stormont collected $2,363 in convenience fees and paid $2,378 in admin fees to Visa and Mastercard for processing transactions.
