CORNWALL – A Riverdale home has extensive smoke and water damage after a basement fire.

Ten Cornwall firefighters were on the scene at 1411 Second Street West just after 8 a.m. this morning.

It’s believed a mattress may have caught fire filling the split-level home with smoke.

Fire Chief Richard McCullough says the point of origin is a basement bedroom and damage is estimated to be $5,000-$10,000.

Firefighters had to smash a window to allow the thick smoke to escape the building.

The occupants of the home escaped without injury.

Firefighters wrapped up their work around 9:40 a.m.

There are no apparent injuries.

A Cornwall fire prevention officer was investigating but McCullough tells Cornwall Newswatch the case has been turned over to Cornwall police.
