CORNWALL – Drivers and pedestrians around Second Street West and Brookdale Avenue got an unexpected treat Wednesday afternoon – no more detours.

Workers pulled up road closed signs on Second Street West at the Hoople Avenue detour around 1 p.m. and opened the road to traffic.

Second Street had been closed at Brookdale since Nov. 10 to allow crews to safe dismantle the concrete decking on the North Channel bridge overhead.

The work hasn’t been all roses, as a motorist reportedly had her car dinged by a piece of falling debris several weeks ago.

The company has evidently paid for the damage — a dent and a couple of scratches in the roof of the car.

Their work was supposed to take roughly three weeks but the road has opened after 10 days.

Shortly after the lane closures on Nov. 10, the area experienced even more problems with an unexpected water main break that has since been repaired.
