CORNWALL – It looks like the St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation may have received a Halloween treat.
The union for 460 lock workers announced this morning its extending the strike deadline until Monday at 5 p.m.
“We remain hopeful that a deal can be reached,” said Unifor national rep Joel Fournier.
Talks will continue through the weekend under a media backout “as long as the parties remain engaged in the process,” read a statement from Unifor.
The workers, from Niagara to Montreal, voted 96 per cent in favour of a strike to back their demands.
They’re afraid jobs will be eliminated when the seaway moves to automate its locking system.
