Three arrested by Project O-Neptune

CORNWALL – After a three-and-a-half month investigation, a multi-unit police force has laid conspiracy charges in relation to a summer tobacco bust.

The RCMP’s Project O-Neptune also involved the O.P.P., Cornwall police, Akwesasne police, CBSA and the Ontario Ministry of Finance.

Police allege three Cornwall men – ages 28, 29 and 32 – conspired to purchase, smuggle and deliver 471 kgs. of tobacco from New York State to Quebec.

The 29-year-old suspect was arrested on July 11, 2014 while Cornwall Regional Task Force members were conducting surveillance. He was allegedly caught loading the tobacco into a minivan. The man is facing a charge of possession of unstamped tobacco under the Excise Act.

Police concluded the case Wednesday with the arrests of the two other accused for their alleged involvement in the July smuggling attempt.

All three are facing conspiracy charges.
