Take Back the Night is an international movement that began almost thirty years ago. Back then, women took to the streets to speak out against the violence they experienced walking alone at night. Today, 1 in 3 women in Canada are survivors of sexual violence. Of those, 80% know their attacker. This is a reality in our community as well. Although the issues we face today vary from the past, the symbolism and tradition of this event are profound.
SASS for Women and Maison Interlude House invite folks from all walks of life; survivors of violence, their loved ones, and allies of survivors, to join us in marching, singing, and dancing in the streets of Cornwall. This march is a show of remembrance of lost victims, support of survivors, solidarity with those abroad to whom the threat of sexual violence at night is widespread, and celebration of the great strides that have been made since this movement began. Take Back the Night has evolved to be a celebration of women and this year will be extremely upbeat, with empowering music, singing and dancing in the streets.
Join us September 24th after 6:30pm. We will rally together at 7pm and begin our march through the streets at 7:30pm. Light snacks and refreshments will follow.
