GLEN WALTER – It was a Whopper of a day Thursday as South Glengarry officials and management of a new Burger King location held a ribbon cutting for its grand opening.

South Glengarry Mayor Frank Prevost, CAO Tim Mills, Deputy Clerk Shauna Baggs and members of the Cornwall Hospital Foundation were there.

The fast food restaurant is at 6215 Boundary Road in South Glengarry and had a soft opening on March 19.

The Boundary Road location has a mix of 25 full- and part-time employees. Some are earning minimum wage while others like shift supervisors, managers and assistant managers have a higher pay rate.

BVD Group Franchise Operator Manpreet Sandhu tells Cornwall Newswatch they plan to offer benefits to their workers.

“That’s something that’s important to us too because we want to support a better life for all of our employees and it also helps with keeping employees with us long term. We like to have employees with us long term, not a high turnover,” Sandhu says.

You may remember the location as Hero Burger, who was a tenant.

Sandhu says Burger King is a better fit for the truck stop given the meal price point and quick service – something essential for truckers on the go.

BVD Group has two other Burger King locations in North Bay and Sault Ste. Marie.

As part of the grand opening, Sandhu also presented the Cornwall Hospital Foundation with a cheque for $2,500 plus a short term food discount for hospital workers as part of the company’s giving back to the community.
