CORNWALL/SOUTH STORMONT – A late night fire has gutted a two car garage, which had a classic car inside it, at a home on Highway 138.

South Stormont firefighters from St. Andrews West and Long Sault were called to a home at 5717 Highway 138 (between Marlyn Street and Stephen Street, one block north of Cornwall Centre Road) around 11:15 p.m. Friday.

The garage, between two homes, was fully involved and flames were shooting through the roof several feet into the night sky.

While trying to snuff out the garage flames, firefighters were also spraying water on the side of the home that was closest to the fire. Some of the siding was melting from the heat and flames.

One neighbour told Cornwall Newswatch, people were using a garden hose to try and beat back the flames before firefighters arrived.

The neighbour said the couple who lived at the home had put a 1950s style classic car in the garage recently. The burnt shell of the car could be seen in one of the garage bays.

Cornwall-SDG Paramedic Services, SD&G O.P.P. and the Cornwall Police Service were also on scene. A section of Highway 138 was closed to traffic.

Firefighters were still on scene at 1:20 a.m. Saturday and a fire official wasn’t immediately available to provide further information. An investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.
