CORNWALL – The Eastern Ontario Health Unit says it’s monitoring for the China-based coronavirus locally.

The EOHU said Friday night that it’s working with regional, provincial and national health authorities to keep tabs on the pneumonia-like illness in the Wuhan region of China.

The virus has sickened hundreds of people and has killed more than two dozen.

Medical Officer of Health Dr. Paul Roumeliotis says the risk to residents in the region is considered low. “We are prepared to respond to any potential cases in our area should they occur,” he said.

So far, there are no confirmed cases in Canada.

Health authorities in the U.S. have confirmed a second case – a woman in Chicago who returned from Wuhan. There are 63 cases being monitored across 22 states for possible coronavirus.

Meanwhile, the number of infections is up to three in France, where those people are being kept in isolation at hospital.

Six possible cases in Quebec have been cleared.
