CORNWALL – The case of a piece of human bone found on the grounds of St. Columban’s Cemetery, has been turned over to the regional coroner.
The bone portion was found by someone on Thursday in the cemetery on Eleventh Street West, prompting police to close off the area with police tape and bring in an anthropologist and the coroner. Investigators were on the scene for two days.
The cemetery reopened Friday afternoon.
In an update to Cornwall Newswatch on Tuesday morning, Cornwall Police Service spokesman Stephanie MacRae said the discovery is not considered suspicious and the case is now in the coroner’s hands.
“No foul play has occurred,” she said.
Regional Supervising Coroner Dr. Louise McNaughton-Filion confirmed to CNW they are now handling the case.
McNaughton-Filion couldn’t share what sort of bone was found. “We’re in an active investigation right now.”
Due to rules in the Coroners Act, we won’t know what happens with the investigation, because the information is only released to select people such as immediate family members, the executor of an estate and other investigative agencies.
