CORNWALL – The city says it received over 150 comments about renaming Riverdale Park to Gerry Grant Park.
In the end after reviewing all those submissions, the Commemorative Naming Committee recommends that Riverdale Park keep its existing name – no change.
In a report to council for Monday’s meeting, Clerk Manon Levesque says “although most comments supported Gerry Grant as an individual, an overwhelming were not in support of renaming Riverdale Park.”
Grant was also a World War Two veteran – injured in battle – and a local volunteer for over seven decades.
Levesque added that many comments also expressed a childhood and historical attachment to the name.
Council is expected to reject the renaming request on Monday.
The report also notes there’s already a “Grant Park” on Kennedy Drive.
