AKWESASNE – The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne says it will start taking applications Tuesday for licences to sell or mass produce marijuana on the territory.

The MCA’s Office of Economic Development will start taking applications at 10 a.m. on Aug. 6 at its Cornwall Island office. They can only be picked up and submitted in person.

Grand Chief Abram Benedict thanked the community and business people for their “extreme patience throughout this process.” Benedict says the regulation will balance community safety while supporting the business sector.

The application process has been a year in the making and started before Canada’s legalization of cannabis in October 2018. Since October, interim licencing rules have been in effect.

The MCA will also be holding public information meetings at 5 p.m. on Wednesday on Cornwall Island, Thursday in Snye and Friday in St. Regis next week to help people with the application process.
