MASSENA, N.Y. – A man from Indiana is dead after drowning in the St. Lawrence River near the Long Sault Dam Monday afternoon.

The 19-year-old, identified as Aiden Thacker of Indiana, was swimming with a friend around 4 p.m. when they were caught up by the current and swept toward the dam, according to WWNY-TV.

The friend was able to break free of the current and swim away but Thacker went missing.

His body was found about three hours later, east of the dam, by the Hogansburg-Akwesasne Volunteer Fire Department boat.

The Long Sault Dam is on the American side of the river between Barnhart Island and the St. Lawrence State Park and Robert Moses State Park to the south. The dam dumps water into Pollys Bay.
