CORNWALL – Mayor Bernadette Clement will be bringing her bubbly personality to the altar later this year.

The mayor has requested through the city clerk to be appointed as a marriage officiant for a ceremony “of a colleague and personal friend” in September.

Josee Menard, a lawyer with the Roy McMurtry Legal Clinic, will tie the knot with Nick Harrison. Clement is the executive director at the legal clinic.

Civil marriages are usually performed by judges, justices of the peace or municipal clerks.

But the practice of having a mayor carrying out a marriage is not unheard of. While this situation is a one-off, Robin Jones, the mayor of Westport in Leeds-Grenville, performs marriages on a regular basis.

The bylaw is among seven bylaws in Monday’s council agenda. They are passed with no discussion unless one or more are pulled for discussion by a council member.
