Letter to the Editor: Can’t get ahead with cost of daycare in Cornwall

It’s something (cost of Cornwall daycares) that needs to get tackled in Ontario especially when the province just east of us (Quebec) has subsidized daycare for $7.75 per day.

Cornwall’s average household income is $62,000. The average in other similar Ontario communities is $80,000. At the same time, our population of seniors is 23% of the population, compared to 16% in similar Ontario communities.

However I’m paying $57.00 per day for my infant to go to daycare. That’s $285.00 per week and about $1,150.00 per month and around $13,000 to $14,000 a year.

Does this make any sense at all?

I’ll tell you what I think. It’s hard working people not able to get ahead because of things like this. I don’t have my parents that can watch my kids every day like some other parents. You try and provide the best quality of life to your kids, but you keep getting gouged constantly!
