CORNWALL – A transformer fire has crippled the Cornwall Civic Complex with a catastrophic power failure.

The fire happened Friday afternoon and the Cornwall Fire Department was on scene.

The fire was quickly put out but the damage to the transformer has meant that power has been knocked out to the entire building and it could be days before its repaired.

Late Friday night, a truck with a large utility trailer was at the back of the building while people were working inside the offices. The bay door to the ice of the Ed Lumley Arena was wide open and the ice already showed signs of melting.

The Aquatic Center will be draining the pool and, with no compressors running, the Ed Lumley Arena is losing its ice. Potential rentals of the convention center and the civic complex salons are also in jeopardy.

City officials hope to have more information Monday.
