CORNWALL – When many people think of traffic collisions in Cornwall their thoughts immediately turn to the Rotary Traffic Circle.
But you may be surprised to learn that it doesn’t even show up on the list for the top 20 intersections for motor vehicle collisions in Cornwall in 2018.
Stats from the Cornwall Police Service annual motor vehicle collision report show McConnell Avenue and Second Street East had the most crashes involving the greatest amount of damage last year.
There were 11 crashes at the intersection involving 19 parties.
Rounding out the top five intersections (number in incidents) were: Pitt Street and Tollgate Road (10), Brookdale Avenue and Tollgate Road (10), Eleventh Street East and McConnell Avenue (9), Brookdale Avenue and Ninth Street West (9).
The report doesn’t spell out why McConnell and Second, which has La Citadelle high school on its corner, has so many crashes. But the intersection is likely one of the few, if not the only one, with special rules for right turns on red lights during morning and afternoon school hours.
As for when drivers had the most collisions, in 2018 it was around 2 p.m. on a Friday.
