CORNWALL – If your new year’s resolution is to find a job in Cornwall, it’s going to be more of a challenge than the end of 2018, according to Manpower.
The employment agency’s quarterly Employment Outlook Survey shows 10 per cent of businesses asked planned to hire, three per cent planned to cut back on staff and 87 per cent were keeping things as is.
The overall outlook for January through March is two percentage points lower than the end of 2018 and down four per cent from the same period last year.
Job growth slowed down at the end of last year and unemployment fell to a 40 year low.
“Employers are having difficulty finding qualified candidates to fill open jobs, which, in turn, is driving up wages but companies are also trying to do more with less to stay competitive,” Manpower Country Manager Darlene Minatel said.
Across Canada, 14 per cent of businesses asked planned to hire, six per cent planned cutbacks, 79 per cent were staying with their current employees and one per cent were unsure.
