AKWESASNE – Cornwall Island District Chief Dennis Chaussi has be re-elected in a five vote squeaker of a by-election Saturday (Dec. 22).
Unofficial results from the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne elections office show the chief, who had been the subject of a community petition to remove him from the band council, received 54 votes.
His closest competitor – Vanessa Lee Adams – got 49 votes, followed by Allie Oakes McCumber with 26.
There were nine candidates on the ballot for district chief.
The results can still be appealed up to Dec. 27 at 5 p.m.
