CORNWALL – Pope Francis has named an auxiliary bishop for the Diocese of Alexandria-Cornwall.

Following the merger of the dioceses of Alexandria-Cornwall and Ottawa earlier this year, both areas have been supervised by Archbishop Terrence Prendergast.

During the merger, the Pope promised another appointment to help with the workload.

The auxiliary bishop named today (Dec. 12), Rev. Guy Desrochers, will help Prendergast with work within Alexandria-Cornwall’s 26 parishes.

Desrochers is from Hull, Que. and was ordained to the priesthood in 1989 when he was 32 years old.

The Bishop-elect will oversee 56,000 Catholics and 29 priests.
