Update 10:45 a.m. Friday: Arrest in Cornwall mall search for thief

CORNWALL – Christmas shoppers were met with uniformed officers scouring both levels of Cornwall Square Thursday afternoon as part of a theft investigation.

Four cruisers were parked outside the Water Street mall just after 1 p.m. Several officers inside the building were speaking with mall security.

Police spokesman Stephanie MacRae told Cornwall Newswatch, it was all part of a search for a suspect after a theft that had “just occurred outside” the mall.

“The suspect was believed to be in the area and, as such, police attended to investigate,” she said.

Officers were talking with a tall man in a leather jacket with, what appeared to be a photograph in his hand, before the group walked outside the building. The man disappeared into the parking garage.

Shortly after that, the police cruisers left the scene around 2 p.m.

An investigation is ongoing.

Police have not said what was taken.
