CORNWALL – The latest job figures from Statistics Canada show unemployment dropped two-tenths of a per cent to 4.7 per cent in October.
It’s the second monthly decline since the Eastern Ontario jobless rate popped above 5 per cent in August.
Much like Eastern Ontario, the Canadian unemployment rate slipped a tenth of a percentage point to 5.8 per cent as the economy added 11,200 jobs.
In Cornwall, the unemployment rate was 5.3 per cent in October, down from 5.4 per cent in September. The numbers – an arbitrary indicator though not statistically significant – are the first reported since February. The numbers had been suppressed over the summer because the sampling size by Statistics Canada was not large enough to ensure confidentiality.
Cornwall’s October employment rate was 52.7 per cent – 2 per cent higher than the same period last year.
