CORNWALL – Police have seized 341 kilograms (750 pounds) of contraband tobacco after chasing down a suspected smuggler earlier this month.

The Cornwall Regional Task Force released details of the bust yesterday (Oct. 26).

Officers had watched people hauling large garbage bags out of a boat along the St. Lawrence River on Oct. 10. They were dumping them in the back of a “blacked-out Sierra pickup truck.”

When police moved in, the vehicle took off and the driver later bailed, leaving the truck in a field on South Branch Road.

SD&G O.P.P. helped the CRTF and arrested a 20-year-old man from Hogansburg, N.Y. The accused was later released and will appear in court next month to face Tobacco Tax Act charges.
