CORNWALL/AKWESASNE – Over 10,000 cigars and several kilograms of unstamped tobacco were seized during the arrest of a former Akwesasne police officer last month, the RCMP revealed Tuesday.
The Mountie-led Cornwall Regional Task Force says 10,163 cigars of various flavours and 69 kilograms (152 pounds) of unstamped tobacco was nabbed by officers at Cornwall’s port of entry on Sept. 17.
On Sept. 28, the Akwesasne Mohawk Police Service (AMPS) released a statement saying Chief Shawn Dulude had been notified of the arrest of 30-year-old Justin Delormier.
The AMPS said Delormier was not on active duty and had been on leave since 2016. “He is no longer an employee of the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne,” the police force said.
Delormier was released after the arrest and will be in court Nov. 6 to answer to an Excise Act charge of possession of unstamped tobacco.
