CORNWALL – After a nearly six month vacancy, the City of Cornwall has a public information coordinator.

Emma Meldrum started yesterday (May 14) in the position left vacant when Kevin Lajoie went over to Cornwall Tourism to be a coordinator there.

Meldrum, originally from Cornwall, was working as a multimedia journalist at the Timmins Daily Press.

She has a Bachelor of Arts from Montreal’s McGill University and a journalism degree from University of Kings College in Halifax, N.S.

The position took several months to fill because the city’s budget committee deferred the hiring in January in order to see if there was merit in replacing the $53,000 position. City council would later authorize the hiring on Feb. 12.

During the interim, department managers were responsible for writing their own news releases and making posts on the city’s Facebook page. The City of Cornwall Twitter account went dead with its last tweet on Jan. 11.
