AKWESASNE – Voters will decide in June on the next council of chiefs to govern Akwesasne.
The executive director for the Office of the Chief Electoral Officer has set the date of the General Election for Saturday, June 30, 2018.
Voters get to choose one grand chief, a position currently held by Abram Benedict, and 12 district chiefs (four district chiefs in the three districts of Cornwall Island, St. Regis and Snye).
Those 13 individuals sit on a governing body known as the District Council of Chiefs.
During the last election in 2015, there were seven new faces on council.
Nominations will be held on Saturday, May 19, 2018 from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. at each of the region’s recreation centers.
Akwesasne politicians serve a three year term.
The population of Akwesasne is approximately 12,000.
