Got a call from a retailer about your credit card? Likely a scam, say O.P.P.

SD&G – Provincial police are warning you about a scam after five people in Toronto were taken for millions of dollars.

SD&G O.P.P. say no one in the area has been duped, that they know of, but are warning you to be careful.

Here’s how the scam works.

A person pretends to be a retailer and calls you, telling you your credit card account has been compromised. The victim is told to hang up and call 911 and their bank.

But police say the scammer doesn’t disconnect the call and poses as the authorities.

The victim is then told to go to the bank and transfer their money into a different bank to safeguard their funds. In actual fact, the con artist makes off with your money.

The O.P.P. say the best way to avoid this scam if to not give out banking or credit card information over the phone and, if there’s a problem with your account, visit the bank and speak with somebody in person.
