SDSG – While Conservative Guy Lauzon has been selected to run federally in Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry in 2019, the other main parties are at different stages or have their focus elsewhere.
Lauzon was nominated for re-election under the CPC banner during the weekend.
SDSG Liberal Riding Association spokesperson, Hayden Moher, told Cornwall Newswatch the Liberal Party of Canada is wrapping up a consultation on the 2019 nomination process.
“We hope to see the report released early in the new year and the opening of nomination races shortly thereafter,” Moher wrote in an email to CNW.
NDP Electoral District Association (EDA) President Marc Benoit said their focus right now is on the upcoming Ontario election in June.
“The NDP EDA for SDSG is focused and working hard after listening to our supporters. We plan to run a strong candidate in 2019 who will listen to the concerns of voters in our region, share (NDP Leader Jagmeet) Singh’s vision for our country, and hopefully be their voice in Ottawa in the next Parliament,” he said in a statement.
A federal nomination meeting likely wouldn’t happen until sometime in the spring of 2019.
In the last federal election in 2015, Guy Lauzon captured 51.1 per cent of the 53,000 votes cast. Liberal Bernadette Clement had 38.5 per cent, NDP Patrick Burger had 8.2 per cent and Green Elaine Kennedy had a 2.2 per cent share.
The next federal election is October 21, 2019.
