CORNWALL – An alert neighbour is credited with spotting a fire brewing between the floorboards of a duplex in Le Village Sunday morning.

Cornwall firefighters were called to the building at 520-520A Montreal Road at 11 a.m. this morning.

Platoon Chief Steven O’Reilly told Cornwall Newswatch the fire had started in the void between the floor in the bathroom and the ceiling in the basement.

The tenant next door noticed the smoke in the basement and called 911.

“The first crew went in and found a little bit of fire back in that area on the north side of the building and they extinguished it right away,” O’Reilly said.

“A very small fire in the washroom of 520A in between the floorboards, there’s different levels of flooring there and it caught in between there,” O’Reilly said.

Firefighters also cut a two feet by three feet section out of the bathroom floor to make sure the fire was out.

The cause is undetermined at this point as the fire department still has to complete its investigation.

There were no injuries.

The 10 firefighters on scene wrapped up just before 12:30 p.m.

The tenants in the duplex will be able to return to their units, O’Reilly said. “Fire’s out and nobody’s displaced.”
