Break on downtown Cornwall parking

CORNWALL – Customers doing their downtown shopping before Christmas will have a little extra jingle in their pocket when it comes to parking.

City council voted tonight (Tuesday) to suspend parking enforcement in the Downtown Business Improvement Area (DBIA) and the Le Village Business Improvement Area starting at 4 p.m.

The move gives shoppers a free two hour window as metered parking is usually enforced until 6 p.m. on weekdays.

The new rule starts Wednesday at 4 p.m. and will continue until the end of the year.

Centretown Coordinator Todd Lihou had asked the city for the restrictions to be lifted during the month of December but council did one better tonight, putting the suspension in effect starting tomorrow.

Council will also explore what it would mean as far as lost revenue for the corporation if it did away with parking enforcement entirely in the downtown areas during December – a report will come to council on Nov. 27.
