Union plans march on city council meeting

CORNWALL – Upset with a municipal wage freeze, workers under the the City of Cornwall’s largest union are planning to make a display at tonight’s council meeting.

In a Sept. 19 memo obtained by Cornwall Newswatch, union members are encouraged to meet at the CUPE office on McConnell Avenue before heading to city council.

“We need to show Council that we are united as well as they are not fixing their “WALMART woes” on our backs,” the memo states.

“WALMART woes” is referring to the current assessment review board proceedings between the city and the distribution center which could see the corporation pay back a portion of taxes based on an ARB decision.

The council meeting starts at 7 p.m. at 360 Pitt Street.

Many of the CUPE contracts, including those for the largest groups of outside workers (Local 234) and inside workers (Local 3251), expired on Sept. 30, 2016.

Local 234 has 85 full-time employees while Local 3251 has 152 full-timers.
