LONG SAULT – A South Stormont man, convicted earlier this year of setting fire to Longue Sault Public School, will be spending another month in jail.

William “Liam” McDonald, 22, was sentenced Monday (Aug. 28) after pleading guilty to mischief, possession of a dangerous weapon and possession of a weapon contrary to a court order.

The court gave McDonald 30 day concurrent sentences on each of the three charges (they will all run at the same time).

He also has to pay $300 in fines and now has a lifetime weapons ban.

The Long Sault man will also be on probation for three years.

McDonald was arrested in late April after SD&G O.P.P. received a report he was in possession of a BB gun. Part of court conditions McDonald was on was not to possess weapons for 10 years.

McDonald had been on a four month “controlled release” house arrest program since January, after pleading guilty to charges in connection to threatening staff at Longue Sault Public School and committing several acts of vandalism, which included setting fire to the building in October 2016.

At the time, court heard he believed the Earth was flat and those beliefs had “consumed him,” leading to the school violence and arson.
