CORNWALL – If you’ve ever thought about taking up running, this may be the time to do it.

The Cornwall Multisport Club is kicking off its popular Learn to Run program this week.

Training coordinator Rick Croney says the program used to be held exclusively in the winter but the club decided to offer it during late summer three years ago.

“We had a huge response to this change,” he said.

The sessions are held twice a week, starting Tuesday (Aug. 29), from 5:15-6 p.m. outside the Aquatic Center and then Saturday mornings from 8-9 a.m. at the track at St. Joseph’s Secondary School.

The 10 week program introduces new runners to the sport through a walk-run cycle, building them up to a five kilometer run by Oct. 28.

Croney says the course allows people to build up their running base.

“Often times, people who try to take up running will go out full-throttle…they burn themselves out after a couple of blocks, and feel badley about their attempt, get discouraged and figure they can’t run.”
