AKWESASNE – Akwesasne has a new police chief.

Shawn Dulude has been appointed to the position, the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne announced Tuesday.

The Akwesasne Mohawk Police Commission, which helped in the interview and candidate selection process, is looking forward to “new and improved approaches to community policing.”

Dulude is from Lachine, Que. and has 24 years of policing experience, starting with the former Vaudreuil-Dorion Police Service in 1993.

He is married with two children and is fluently bilingual in English and French, with some knowledge of Italian.

He will start his new position Sept. 5.

The Akwesasne Mohawk Police Service has been overseen by Acting Chief Lee Ann O’Brien since March after the MCA parted ways with Chief Jerry Swamp. Swamp had been chief since 2008.
