Person killed by train east of Cornwall

SOUTH GLENGARRY – A person is dead after being struck by a Via Rail train, heading from Montreal to Toronto.

Via Rail spokesman Mariam Diaby told the Montreal Gazette that Train 669 struck a trespasser on the rail line.

SD&G O.P.P. say two male pedestrians were on a portion of the CN Rail bridge off the end of Celtic Lane, west of Lancaster, around 7:50 p.m.

One was struck and killed while the second male was taken to hospital by paramedics with minor injuries.

Train 669 left Montreal at 6:40 p.m. and usually arrives at 7:55 p.m. in Cornwall.

According to the Via Rail online train schedule, the train hasn’t reached Cornwall since it left Dorval at 7:10 p.m.

Police say the railway was reopened around 10:30 p.m., undoubtedly leading to lengthy delays for rail passengers tonight.
