CORNWALL — A man who murdered an Akwesasne man in 2014 is being sentenced today in a city courtroom.

Christopher Baldwin of Westport, Ont. is expected to be sentenced at 10 a.m. today (Monday) after striking a plea deal to a charge of manslaughter.

A co-accused in the case — Rachel Fenn of Summerstown — was given a 15 month jail sentence last month after pleading guilty to manslaughter.

The sentence gave her credit for 1,367 days of pre-trial custody. She also has a lifetime weapons ban and will be on two years probation after her sentence is complete.

The details of the Nov. 30, 2014 death of David “Tawit” Benson Hopps, 61, of Cornwall Island have been under a publication ban since the two accused were tried separately.

That ban is expected to be lifted with today’s sentencing.
