What will be named after Bob Turner? Not the civic complex

CORNWALL – While the Cornwall Civic Complex won’t be renamed, something may eventually bear the name of the city’s first black parks and recreation director.

Coun. Claude McIntosh had first considered having the Civic Complex be renamed the Bob Turner Memorial Center.

But he withdrew the motion Monday night and asked for a report on a couple of other options.

Those are renaming the Aquatic Center the Bob Turner Aquatic Center, or the pads at the Benson Center be renamed after Bob Turner, Si Miller and Newsy Lalonde.

Coun. Andre Rivette supported the plan.

The report from staff will come back during the second council meeting in April.

The move comes after the Bob Turner Arena on Fourth Street was condemned and torn down years ago and a move this month — February — being Black History Month.
