CORNWALL – Three people from Quebec have been arrested after Cornwall Regional Task Force officials seized over three metric tons of tobacco.

The Mounties intercepted a cube van as it was leaving a South Glengarry property along the waterfront on Tuesday (Dec. 20).

Officers found 3,080 kilograms to find cut tobacco inside.

Two men, ages 22 and 33, and a 42-year-old woman – all from St-Jerome, Que. – are facing charges under the Excise Act and the Ontario Tobacco Tax Act.

The woman is facing additional charges of drug possession and drug trafficking.

They were later released with a promise to appear in court in January.

A conviction on the federal and provincial charges could bring a maximum penalty for each person of $2.2 million in fines and possible jail time.
