OSNABRUCK CENTER – Two people trying to get a vehicle out of ditch were struck by another vehicle late Monday afternoon, killing one of them.

SD&G O.P.P. say the other victim is in life-threatening condition in an area hospital.

It happened around 5:30 p.m. Monday (Nov. 21) on County Road 18, about two kilometers west of County Road 14 near Osnabruck Center.

Investigators say a driver, heading east, lost control on County Road 18 and went in the ditch, striking two people who were trying to get another vehicle unstuck from a previous unrelated crash.

The one adult man was pronounced dead at the scene while the other man was taken to hospital with critical injuries.

SD&G O.P.P. Const. Joel Doiron told Cornwall Newswatch their preliminary indications are one of the men was the driver and the other was someone living in the area who knew the driver and had come to help get the vehicle unstuck.

Their names are not being released until family are notified.

A section of County Road 18 between Rombough Road and Morgan Road remains closed for an investigation.

Police have not said if weather was a factor though the region has been experiencing high wind, flurries and drifting snow on area roads.

More information is expected to be released tomorrow morning, Doiron said.
