Police officer dragged during chase

SOUTH STORMONT – An O.P.P. officer had to be treated for injuries after being dragged by a suspect during a police chase.

It started Tuesday afternoon on Highway 401 when officers with the O.P.P. Highway Safety Division tried to stop a vehicle for speeding.

At one point during the pursuit, which headed off the 401 and into South Stormont, the vehicle stopped at the traffic light.

An officer walked up and reached into the vehicle, in an attempt to disable it, but the driver took off again, police said.

The officer was dragged “a short distance.”

He was taken to hospital and treated for minor injuries and later released.

The chase ended on Highway 138 near St. Andrews West where the driver was arrested even though he resisted officers during the takedown.

A 30-year-old Ottawa man is charged with dangerous driving, flight while being pursued by police, assaulting a police officer and resisting a police officer.

He was held for a bail hearing in Cornwall.
