‘Disturbing’ deliberate fish kill, says MCA

(Newswatch Group/Bill Kingston, File)

AKWESASNE – Investigators with the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne are trying to figure out who is killing and gutting Lake Sturgeon along the St. Lawrence River.

The MCA said Thursday it was informed by an Akwesasne resident about 11 sturgeon found floating in the river after the fish were gutted and their carcasses dumped.

The band believes whomever is killing the fish is doing it for the eggs, to create caviar.

The MCA said it does not condone “these disturbing actions” against a fish that is protected under the Species at Risk Act.

If you find any killed sturgeon or notice suspicious behaviour, you’re asked to call the MCA conservation department at 613-575-2250 extension 1021, the environment department at extension 1040 or the Akwesasne Mohawk Police Service.
