CORNWALL – An event to set young bicycle riders off on the right foot has seen its biggest crowd so far.

Organizers estimate the Bikes and Badges event Saturday (June 4) saw nearly 80 participants at St. Lawrence College to get free bells, helmets, horns, lights – an even a bike or two.

β€œFor kids on the road, we obviously want them riding their bikes properly. We want to make sure they’re riding with the proper gear so they don’t get hurt and that’s in essence why we’re doing it,” Const. Matt Dupuis told Cornwall Newswatch.

Donations of bicycles and gear came from Canadian Tire, Total Cyclery and Sports, the Cornwall Police Association, the Cornwall Community Police Service and the Kinsmen Club of Cornwall.

The kids were also treated to a motorcycle demonstration.

This was the third year for the Cornwall Community Police Service’s Bikes and Badges day.
